Book Review: The Martian by Andy Weir

I’ve said before that I’ll be doing Book Reviews but I’ve also decided I’d only do Book Reviews of books I really liked. Frankenstein was not even close, To The Lighthouse was ok and might be brought up with a feminist post later but it wasn’t a recommendation really.

The Martian, though, was amazing.

Summary: You have an astronaut that ended up stuck on Mars and he has to use his Engineering and Botany skills to survive the 4 years he thinks it’ll be before the next mission comes to Mars and he has nothing to entertain him but his survival efforts and 70s TV and Music.

It’s pretty fantastic.

They released a movie trailer and I knew I wanted to read it first, so I moved this book up to the top of my to-read list. I’m so glad I did cause I could not put this thing down. I think I would have been so bored and given up so quickly if the voice hadn’t been so amazing. The primary narration is in log entries by Mark Watney and he is a total smartass.

I know some of the language will probably get toned down in the movie but I hope the tone stays. That’s the part I’m seriously looking forward to. I can’t get other people to read the book but they’ll sacrifice 3 hours to watch a movie and I really want to share this character who is about 50% science and 30% dork.

This botany nerd endangering himself to survive for 18 months on an uninhabitable planet is charming and hilarious and I highly recommend it.
